Glimpses Through The Rain - Chapter 6

CHAPTER 6

“Mr. and Mrs. Alvarez?” the nurse approached them as they were going out of their car after he parked it in front of the hospital.

“Yes. That’s us,” Mitch answered.

“Doctor Ramirez alerted us about your coming,” he said as he showed them his other colleagues, “we’ve prepared the room for your wife. We were instructed to do a quantitative hCG test and an ultrasound examination right away. The results will be shown to your personal physician later on. Doctor Ramirez is on her way here and will be doing the pelvic exam herself.”

The team of nurses assisted Lei in having her comfortably seated on a wheel chair as they all rushed her inside the emergency room. “Mr. Alvarez, I need you to fill out some papers as part of our standard operating procedure. Please follow me, sir,” the nurse showed Mitch the way.

“Honey, I’ll be there by your side as soon as I can, ok? Don’t worry, they’re going to take care of you, love,” he whispered in assurance to Lei's right ear and kissed her.

“Be there soon, Mitch. I’m scared.” Lei couldn’t hide her fears to her husband despite the care that the nurses assured her of.

“I will, Lei. I’ve got to go to the office to finish those papers so I can be right there with you a.s.a.p.” Mitch assured her again and kissed her on the lips.

“Mrs. Alvarez, hi! How are you feeling right now?” Doctor Ramirez asked as she was entering the room.

“The pain subsided now. But I was in great pain earlier when you were doing the pelvic examination on me. Doc, thank you for giving instructions to your staff to make those pains go away,” she uttered as she held out a hand to draw the doctor to come near her.

“Is this painful?” the doctor asked as she gave pressure just above Lei’s abdomen.

“No, it isn't,” she confirmed.

“How about here, are you feeling any pain here?” as the doctor pressed her abdomen more than twice.

“Ouch! Yes, that hurts.”

"Did something happen tonight which could have been the cause of your abdominal pains?" the doctor asked again.

The couple looked at each other and felt their cheeks blushed in front of their physician. They couldn't say a word.

"I think I know what you both were thinking and probably might say." She paused and made a serious look at the couple and as a professional, she delivered them an expertly advice with a timid smile, "Well, Mr. and Mrs. Alvarez, having sex while the wife is pregnant is not a mortal sin. It's not prohibited either. That's normal for a couple in love and well, to appease your fear, I am certain that was not the reason why Lei was in pain earlier."

“So...how are we coping so far, Mitch?” the doctor looked at him as she was holding Lei’s hand.

“Oh, we’re both calm now. I’ve filled out all the necessary papers while she was being prepped for the examinations done awhile ago.” “Have you gotten the results, doc?” he asked.

“Yes. I saw the results. Unfortunately, since your wife is just two weeks pregnant and at an early a stage as this, we can hardly see the actual status of your baby in her womb. It’s hard to predict the condition of your wife’s pregnancy. I am suspecting something but I need you to come back 3 weeks from now so we can do further tests then we can conclude on what it is exactly. For the meantime, here is the prescriptions which can help Lei smoothly handle those abdominal pains when they arise from time to time,” she stated as she handed the small sheet of paper across Lei towards Mitch.

“What was it that you’re suspecting, doc?” Mitch asked further as he received the prescription and inserted it in his left pocket without even reading it.

“Not now, Mitch. We don’t want to instigate more fears to your wife, do we?” “Besides, I’d need to discuss with my fellow doctor about it yet. And once we’re done with the other tests three weeks from now, I will let you both know, I promise,” she stated with much assurance.

"I understand," he conceded.

"Just make sure I get to see her three weeks from now and you better be there, too, Mitch. We'll do another test on her and together we'll discuss those results from the ultrasound and the hCG test we did," the doctor indicated. "For now, Lei needs rest. I suggest you stay here till mid-day. That'll give Lei and the baby enough rest before you take them home. I think you need rest, too, Mitch."

"Ok. We'll do that. Thanks, doc." the couple answered in unison.

"No problem. I'm always on-call when it's with you and for you. After all, you haven't forgetten that Lei's father is my cousin, do you?"

Sure enough, Doctor Ramirez has been so generous of sharing her time whenever any of Lei's family members were in need of her care and attention even at an indecent hour of the day such as today. Although, she had been so formal each time she was with the couple but she never treated them just like one of her regular patients. She was single by choice - no husband and kid, and she had always treated Lei with much concern as if Lei was her own child.

"Doctor Ramirez, I want you to know..." Lei wasn't able to finish her statement as the doctor interrupted her.

"That's Rosy for you, my dear," she said. "Well, I know what you're about to say and don't mention it, please. It's always my pleasure to be of help to my family. You’re my kid, you know that, too. And of course, I don't want to be able to see your father barging in to my office one day, harassing me of statements like I've neglected to help you or something."

All three of them laughed.

"But, seriously, thank you Rosy, for all your help," Mitch said.

"No problem. Alright, I better get going now, honey." She gave Lei a kiss on her forehead and shook Mitch's hand. "I have some patients who I need to check on, anyway. See you in three weeks, lovebirds," Rosy teasingly exited her way out of the room.
