Glimpses Through The Rain - Chapter 4

CHAPTER 4

When Mitch woke up he made a quick glance at the alarm clock. Obviously, the clock either stopped ticking or that any of them hadn’t been able to hear its snooze. They weren't alarmed at the supposed right time. The clock read 10:00.

They should have been up by six o'clock as they usually did every Saturday - jogging together for two rounds, sipping a cup of coffee, walking their beloved Sissy as they do two rounds of tour through their village again and finally, breakfast for everybody before a shower. Sissy was of a Pomeranian Poodle cross breed and was one year old when Lei had her as a gift for her eighteenth birthday from her mother and Mitch also fell in love with Sissy the day he met her. Sissy warmly returned the affection to both of them.

Mitch thought today might be an exception; after all, they deserved a treat. What happened earlier was extra ordinary. It was sort of an excuse for them for not having to feel guilty about breaking their morning exercise routine. Sissy would understand, he further thought. He stood away from the bed, stretched his arms upwards for a couple of seconds then rushed to the bathroom, washed his face, shaved off his facial hair, brushed his teeth and took a bath for 10 minutes. When he got out of the bathroom, he put on his sleeveless white shirt matched with his navy blue boxer's shorts. He stroked his hair with his right hand when he faced the mirror. Once he was set, he went downstairs to fix breakfast. He prepared a couple of sunny side up eggs, four pieces of toasted bread and paired them with the two cups of creamed tea. He brought their breakfast to their bedroom upstairs. He set the breakfast on their coffee table near the window.

He woke Lei up with a kiss on her lips and greeted, “Good Morning. Wake up my pretty darling, we’ve already overslept.”

“Good mo-o-rning, sweetie. Wow, breakfast! " Lei glanced at the clock and noticed that the time was now 11:30. "I mean, Wow lunch, or, brunch!" she corrected herself while she giggled.

Mitch showed her a silly-griming-face.

"You fixed them for us? Thank you, sweetheart." Lei giggled again. "Your smiles seems mischievous to me, Mitch. What are you up to?” again, she asked.

“Nothing. I just thought that maybe we should go to the doctor to seek for a professional advice and then we’ll go shopping. What do you think?”

“Shopping? What are we shopping for?”

“Well, we have to go look for baby stuff, like a crib, mattress, clothes and milk-bottles.”

“Mitch, don’t you think it’s too early to do that?”

“Don’t be silly, honey. We’ve got to prepare everything. We've got to pre-plan the baby's first two years as early as now." They both laughed. "Seriously, Lei, I don’t want our baby to have the notion that we’ve never planned his or her arrival. Well, we haven't at first but let's not make the baby know that. I just want our baby to know that we’re proud to be its parents.”

They both smiled at each other then.

“Hmmn, ok, if you say so. But first, let me have a quick shower and then we'll have breakfast, or lunch or brunch or whatever we should call that food you prepared at this hour,” she stated and teased altogether. "Dear, would you please hand me my night dress? That's right there atop the chair at the coffee table," she requested.

"Uh-oh!" Mitch uttered.

"What?" she right away asked.

"You're in big trouble, lady. I'm never good at dressing you up, you know that. I am always good the other way around." Mitch warned.

Lei laughed her heart out. She thought, it felt so good to get a good laugh in that sunny beautiful Saturday.

"I suppose you might have thought, you should already have me scared by now, am I right?" Lei instigated.

"Uh-huh!?!"

"Well, sorry to disappoint you, boy. I'm not scared at all. Nope. Nope. Nope!" she teasingly waved, sideways, her right index finger at him.

"What did you call me, just now?"

"What? Darling, I've said so many words already. What do you mean, what I just called you?" was the curiosity she threw at him as she tried to recall all the words she had just said. "Oh! I got it...you mean, I called you, boy? Well, what's wrong with calling you boy, boy?" she laughed even louder. She always liked teasing him that way.

"Oooooh, you're going to pay for that. I'll really make you pay for calling me boy. I'll show you what a boy haven't learned from a man as of yet." he teasingly chided.

They both giggled, tickled each other's side, played around, kissed each other, fell off the bed and soon they made love at mid-day.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You’re 2 weeks pregnant, Mrs. Alvarez. Congratulations!” Doctor Ramirez confirmed with a cheerful smile.
“Did you hear that sweetheart? Doctor said I’m really pregnant!” Lei blurted. "Thank you so much, Doc."
“Yes, yes. I heard that, honey. Doc, is there something which Lei should be drinking or should be aware of in light of this pregnancy; vitamins or perhaps limitations in activities?” He excitedly asked.
“For now, just get sufficient rest. Prohibit strenuous activities. Avoid going near situations which will cause stress or so much pressure to you, Lei. No more staying up so late and drink a lot of milk, ok? Mitch, come with me to my office so I can give you the prescription while Lei is fixing herself. Oh, and don’t forget to bring her here again tomorrow so we can do the quantitative hCG test.”
Mitch did not quite understand the doctor’s last statement so he asked further, “What’s an hCG test, doc?”
“Lei mentioned that she had a spotting before. Tomorrow, we will be getting samples of her blood to measure the levels of the hormone human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced by her placenta and appears in her blood and urine as early as 8 to 10 days after conception. We have to do this test to ensure that her pregnancy is ok. You see, the levels of the hormone hCG double every 2 days for the first several weeks of pregnancy, so if hCG levels are lower than expected for her stage of pregnancy, one possible explanation might be an ectopic pregnancy,” Doctor Ramirez explained.
“ECTOPIC PREGNANCY?!?!” Lei shockingly interjected.
“Yes, ectopic pregnancy, Lei. We haven’t even performed the blood testing yet so we’re a little too early to waste our energies worrying about that. But hey, you asked for information, Mr. Alvarez, and I only explained it,” the doctor reasoned defensively.
“Yes, yes. I know, I know. We just both got shocked. I am sorry,” was Mitch’s apology.
Lei touched her tummy. She just couldn't believe herself. She heard from the doctor that she was pregnant. It was confirmed. It was real. She was pregnant. A baby in her womb now. She was so happy. Negative thoughts should have no room in her mind, she enforced to herself.
“It’s alright. For first time parents, that’s obviously understandable. Now, Mitch, do follow me to my office so I can right away give you the prescription, ok?” the doctor suggested.
“I’ll be there in a second, doc,” was his answer to Doctor Ramirez who was already making herself an exit from their room by then and Mitch turned to face Lei, “It’s ok honey. We have nothing to fear about anything as of yet. The baby’s going to be just fine. I’ll be right back with you once I’ve gotten the prescription. Would you please wait for me at the reception area when you’re done here?”
Lei responded to her husband, “Sure. I’ll be there in a couple of minutes.”
Before he left, Mitch held her face and gave her a short smack on the lips, “Thank you honey. I love you. I'll see you later.”
