Glimpses Through The Rain - Chapter 3

CHAPTER 3

“Huh? Wha...what was it? You’re pregnant! Yo-o-ou’re pregnant?” was all he managed to say. “Since when did you find out that you’re pregnant, Lei?” he asked.

“Just now,” was Lei’s response as she showed him the pregnancy-test gadget.

Silence filled the room. Soon, her heartbeat raced faster as if her chest was about to burst. Out of joy? Out of pain? Was he in doubt? She couldn’t identify which one exactly.

She sensed something strange from him so she inquired, “Mitch, why do you sound unhappy with the news that I am pregnant? Are you upset? I thought you’d like to have one?”

Mitch sat up straight on his side of the bed, turned on the lamp stand at his right, saw fear from Lei’s eyes and thought that any minute from now he might see tears falling down through her meek face.

“Yes...No. Oh honey, I mean, I am happy." "Yes, I am happy that you are pregnant! Honest, I am. But I am just tired from yesterday’s activities, it's no more than three hours since I arrived home and you woke me up with an unexpected greeting."

Mitch paused for a second and added, "Baby, I’m so sorry if my half-conscious initial reactions were somewhat uncooperative and had dismayed you. I love you so much. And I am one hell of a proud knowing that you are carrying my baby, our baby!"

He was so full of emotions. He was filled with joy and gladness yet also filled with worries. He added, "But just awhile there, I recalled how you had wished not to get pregnant within at least two years from the time of our wedding and darling, we haven’t surpassed a year yet so here, I also did not know how to react to your news knowing that I was one of the culprits who messed up with your wishes.”

Lei tried to process all those words she heard from Mitch. She tried to grasp the meaning behind those emotions, both hers and his. Then, she thought Mitch got a point. He was right...totally, right. She had indeed been so vocal about wanting to spend quality and intimate moments with him alone, without the distraction of a kid in their lives as husband and wife. She felt sorry of herself for being so heartless in believing that kids would overwhelm them with demands for their time and dedication as soon as they started coming into the picture...But that was before!

Now, no more reasons made sense to Lei as she was completely taken aback by the fact that she was going to be a mother soon. With consciousness and much given self-consent, she disregarded and disproved what she had said and thought in the past about getting pregnant so soon. Mitch and Lei got married only seven months ago but even that did not matter to her anymore. Her focus was plainly at that very moment wherein she was sitting on a bed in front of Mitch as she relayed the greatest news of all. To her that was what mattered…should have solely mattered. She was pregnant! No word ever written in anybody’s vocabulary could truly define what she was feeling right there and then. Tears started to fall off her face, like raindrops flowing through the window panes.

At first she tried to hide them from Mitch but she was so vulnerable to even will to control her emotions.

Mitch was there to rescue her, to assure and comfort her. "Come here, honey, I'm so sorry, I did not mean to make you cry," he whispered as he lovingly hugged her.

Lei moved closer to hug him back while tears continued to fall out of her eyes, "No, it's not you darling. I am just so happy right now. Yes, you’re right. I should feel embarrassed before you because now it is I who’s eating up all those words I've said myself. But I couldn’t care any less, could I!?! As right now I am just full of happiness. Am I making any sense to you, Mitch? You see, I am going to be a mom, soon!"

Mitch held Lei on her shoulders creating a few inches of space between them and he made her turn her back from him. He embraced her then and said, "No, you don't have to be embarrassed, baby. I am so relieved that you are happy with this news. I just thought you wouldn’t be. But yes, you are going to be a mom, soon. That’s great isn’t it? And I am going to be a dad, soon, too! How heavenly! See, it's going to be alright for you, for me and for our baby. We're both going to take care of it so lovingly." Then Mitch gave Lei a kiss on her upper left ear almost near her forehead.

Lei turned to face him and looked at him straight in the eyes. She found his tears also falling down onto his cheeks. She held his face with her shaking warm hands. She wanted to kiss those tears away and to be able to return the favour of comforting him as he did to her awhile ago. She moved his face even closer to her own. She first kissed the upper lids of his eyes, the tip of his nose and then his lips. He felt his lips needing more than that short kiss she gave him. He kissed her back. He kissed her longer as if he hadn’t seen her in months. He devoured her lips as if to make it known that those lips belonged to him as their lips swayed in all possible directions. His tongue searched for hers and when it touched hers, alas! Heaven and Earth...Sun and Moon...Night and Day...as if all got string-tied, almost incomprehensibly inseparable. Their souls connected. Lei and Mitch no longer existed. They got lost in that romantic mood. They made love at early dawn.
